At least two persons were killed and several others injured following a suspected aerial attack on Kurgi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
Residents told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that a surveillance helicopter believed to belong to the Nigerian Air Force flew into the area on Sunday afternoon, hovered for several minutes, and opened fire.
Eyewitnesses said the gunshots struck residents who were carrying out their normal activities at the time of the incident, adding that women and children were among those affected.
The attack reportedly triggered panic in the community, forcing many residents to flee their homes to neighbouring areas, including Bangi town, in search of safety.
A resident, Sulaiman Sanusi, described the incident as “shocking and unprovoked” and called on relevant authorities to urgently investigate the attack and ensure medical care for those injured.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies had not issued any official statement on the incident.
