Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) held Thursday at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier, Eagle Square, Abuja. Tinubu is currently attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026 in the United Arab Emirates.

Organized annually by the Ministry of Defence, AFCRD honours fallen military personnel who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation, including those who died during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peace support operations, and ongoing internal security operations, particularly the fight against terrorism.

The event also recognises living veterans and seeks to raise both moral and financial support for their welfare and that of families of deceased service members.

While the day is observed worldwide, Nigeria’s commemoration reflects its unique history. Formerly aligned with Commonwealth Remembrance Day on November 11, Nigeria shifted the observance to January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War, making it more nationally significant.

AFCRD 2026 carries added importance as it coincides with notable successes by the Armed Forces in the Northeast and other regions, highlighting the courage, professionalism, and sacrifices of personnel ensuring national security.

The Federal Government reiterated its gratitude to these gallant Nigerians and called on citizens, organisations, and the private sector to provide continuous support, especially to wounded personnel and the families of fallen heroes.
