Businessman and socialite Obi Cubana has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, saying peace in the South-East cannot be fully restored until he regains his freedom.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Cubana expressed concern over rising insecurity nationwide. He cited recent incidents, including the United States placing Nigeria on its “Country of Particular Concern” list, the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, the killing of a Brigadier General, attacks on worshippers in Kwara State, the sentencing of Kanu, and the kidnapping of more than 50 students from a Catholic school in Niger State.
He said the string of violent events had created fear and anxiety across the country. According to him, he and several other concerned Nigerians have held discussions with key political stakeholders including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President’s son on issues such as insecurity, taxation, ease of doing business, operations of regulatory agencies, and possible political solutions to Kanu’s detention.
Cubana insisted that many people in the South-East believe stability cannot return to the region without Kanu’s release. “Tempers are high, but we all want MNK out, and we will never rest until he is free,” he said.
He urged President Tinubu to listen to public appeals and adopt dialogue-based approaches to resolve grievances, adding that negotiations remain essential in building a united country where citizens can live and work without fear.
He ended his message with a note of solidarity to the Igbo community.
