Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said that hope is not lost for the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, despite his recent conviction.
Kalu spoke on Friday, a day after a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on four counts and handed additional jail terms on three others.
He said efforts toward a political resolution were already underway and would intensify now that the judicial process has reached a conclusion. According to him, the presidency is expected to consider appeals from Igbo leaders seeking Kanu’s release.
Kalu expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would listen to these calls, urging residents of the South East and Nigerians in general to remain calm.
“It is now time to explore political solutions that were previously hindered because the matter was in court. Now that judgment has been delivered, we will intensify our request for the President’s intervention. We are sure he is not averse to it. All hope is not lost,” he said.
