Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is being undermined by reckless political behaviour, insisting that politics must not be reduced to a platform for unruly conduct. Speaking at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, which also marked his 68th birthday, Jonathan said leadership must be anchored on responsibility, civility and nation-building.
He said no government can thrive without the support of its citizens, and no society can progress without leaders who listen and act with clarity. According to him, the rising wave of hostile political rhetoric across Africa threatens democratic stability, adding that politics “is for people who want to build, not destroy.”
The event drew leading African statesmen, diplomats and business leaders. Jonathan also expressed concern over the recent surge in violent attacks and abductions in Nigeria, urging leaders at all levels to prioritise citizens’ safety while safeguarding democratic institutions.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Jonathan for his statesmanship, describing his 2015 concession of defeat as the defining moment that helped Nigeria avoid crisis. Shettima said Nigeria’s democracy has endured because of leaders who place national interest above personal ambition.
He added that Jonathan’s conduct since leaving office has earned him wide respect and positioned his foundation as a model for peacebuilding and post-office leadership in Africa. Newly elected PDP National Chairman and former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, also commended the foundation’s contributions to mediation, conflict resolution and democratic strengthening.
