As Nigerians usher in 2026, Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has ruled out complacency in governance, pledging accelerated consolidation of achievements recorded by his administration over the past two and a half years.

Mbah described 2026 as a year of significant progress for Enugu State, stressing that the optimism of his government is rooted in tangible achievements already made. He gave the assurance in his New Year broadcast to the people of the state, calling for unity and optimism among residents.

Reflecting on his administration’s performance, the governor highlighted progress in the revival of moribund assets, reforms in the transport and water sectors, improved security, road and tourism infrastructure, as well as advances in education, agriculture and investment inflows. He, however, cautioned against complacency, noting that sustaining progress requires greater effort.

According to him, 2026 would not be a “victory lap” but a continuation of an ongoing development journey. He said the focus would be on consolidating achievements carefully to ensure long-term benefits, warning that comfort could slow progress.

Outlining key projects for the year, Mbah said all urban roads across Enugu cities would be paved and upgraded with proper drainage, walkways and street lighting to enhance safety. He added that water projects, including the 9th Mile 24/7 water scheme, the planned Ajali scheme revamp and Oji River project, would expand access to clean water across the state.

The governor also announced that all 260 Smart Schools would become fully operational, providing digital learning facilities, science laboratories, renewable energy and free daily meals to over 300,000 children. In addition, fully equipped primary healthcare centres would be opened in each of the state’s 260 wards to deliver accessible healthcare services.

Mbah said operations at the Enugu airport would be expanded, with plans to increase Enugu Air’s fleet to 20 aircraft in 2026 to boost trade, tourism and investment. He also promised enhanced security infrastructure, continued industrial revival, stronger support for small and medium enterprises, and expanded connectivity to improve livelihoods.

The governor warned criminals against testing the resolve of his administration, assuring that all crimes would be tracked and prosecuted. He reiterated his commitment to inclusive development and prudent use of public funds, urging citizens to remain engaged and hold government accountable.

Mbah concluded by wishing the people of Enugu State and Nigerians a happy New Year, calling for unity and cooperation, and reaffirming his administration’s resolve to ensure no one is left behind.
