President Bola Tinubu has said 2026 will mark the beginning of a more robust phase of economic growth for Nigeria, assuring citizens that the new year will bring greater prosperity and tangible benefits from ongoing reforms.

In his New Year message titled “2026 Marks the Beginning of a More Robust Phase of Economic Growth,” Tinubu said his administration’s reforms were yielding measurable results and positioning the country for sustained, inclusive growth.

The President noted that despite global economic challenges, Nigeria recorded steady progress in 2025, including consistent quarterly GDP growth, improved exchange rate stability and sustained trade surpluses. He said inflation declined to below 15 per cent by the end of the year, adding that government was determined to reduce it further in 2026.

According to him, the Nigerian Stock Exchange closed 2025 with a 48.12 per cent gain, while foreign reserves rose to $45.4 billion as of December 29, 2025, providing a buffer against external shocks. He also said foreign direct investment improved significantly, rising to $720 million in the third quarter of 2025 from $90 million in the previous quarter, reflecting renewed investor confidence.

Tinubu said credit rating agencies, including Moody’s, Fitch and Standard & Poor’s, had affirmed Nigeria’s economic direction, while sound monetary policies continued to support growth.

The President also highlighted tax reforms aimed at harmonising the tax system across all tiers of government to reduce multiple taxation and raise revenue sustainably. He commended states that had aligned with the national tax harmonisation agenda, describing the reforms as critical to financing infrastructure and social investments.

On security, Tinubu said economic progress must go hand in hand with peace and stability. He disclosed that, in collaboration with international partners, including the United States, Nigeria carried out operations against terrorist targets in parts of the Northwest on December 24, with sustained military actions continuing in the Northwest and Northeast.

He reiterated his support for decentralised policing with appropriate safeguards, alongside properly regulated forest guards, to tackle terrorism, banditry and related crimes.

Looking ahead, Tinubu said the government would accelerate the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme in 2026, targeting the empowerment of at least 10 million Nigerians through agriculture, trade, food processing and mining. He added that investments in infrastructure — including roads, power, ports, railways, airports, healthcare and education would continue without interruption.

The President called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to nation-building, urging citizens to support reforms and uphold patriotism.

“I wish all Nigerians a peaceful, productive and prosperous New Year,” Tinubu said, pledging continued efforts to protect lives, property and the nation’s territorial integrity.
