Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that 2026 will bring renewed hope and steady national progress, driven by institutional responsibility, legislative diligence and collective resolve.
In a New Year message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio commended Nigerians for their resilience and stressed the role of the National Assembly—particularly the Senate—in sustaining democratic stability, promoting accountability and advancing national development.
“As we enter the year 2026, I extend my warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year. I commend the resilience, patience and civic maturity of our people, even in challenging times,” he said.
Akpabio noted that while the Executive implements government policies, the National Assembly remains committed to its constitutional duties of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure governance reflects citizens’ aspirations.
According to him, the Senate will continue to provide legislative support where necessary, exercise oversight where required and act in the interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice.
He expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits and youth unemployment would yield more visible results in 2026, stressing that sustainable progress depends on strong institutions rather than individuals.
“Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable. The National Assembly will continue to work to strengthen these institutions and ensure that public policy is people-centred and forward-looking,” he said.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akpabio cautioned against divisive politics and what he described as false messianic narratives, urging Nigerians to remain discerning as political activities intensify.
He called on political actors to exercise restraint and a sense of national duty, adding that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law through constructive engagement with the Executive, Judiciary and other stakeholders.
Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant and hopeful in the year ahead, while supporting democratic institutions and working collectively for peace and national progress.
“On behalf of my family, my constituents, the Senate and the entire National Assembly, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful celebration and a prosperous 2026,” he said.
