Two people, including the wife of a cleric, were killed on Sunday during a violent attack by unknown gunmen on St. Andrews Anglican Church in Isiokwe, Lilu community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
A visit to the church on Monday revealed a scene of devastation: burnt vehicles, charred remains of the priest’s residence, and scattered personal belongings. The attack, which occurred in the early hours as worshippers were preparing for service, also injured several others and destroyed parts of the main church building.
One eyewitness described the assault: “Heavily armed hoodlums invaded the church, opened fire, and set properties ablaze, including the priest’s home and church vehicles. The community is still in shock and fear.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident. Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had condemned the attack and ordered an immediate security response. “Joint security forces have been deployed, and intelligence-driven operations intensified to prevent further attacks. The perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Ikenga added.
Lilu, a border community between Anambra and Imo states, has been a recurrent target for gunmen, who have frequently attacked residents and security formations in recent months.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and provide information that could aid ongoing investigations.
