US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed mild disappointment with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not yet reviewing Washington’s proposed plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking to reporters on the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Honors, Trump said the United States had been in discussions with both Moscow and Kyiv, including direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that Zelensky had not gone through the latest draft of the proposal as of “a few hours ago.”
“So we’ve been speaking to President Putin and we’ve been speaking to Ukrainian leaders — including President Zelensky — and I have to say I’m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal,” Trump said.
Days of meetings between US and Ukrainian officials concluded on Saturday without a breakthrough, though Zelensky agreed to continue dialogue aimed at achieving what he described as “real peace.”
The negotiations followed a visit to the Kremlin by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, where Russian officials rejected parts of the American plan.
The peace proposal, first introduced last month, has undergone several revisions amid criticism that earlier drafts were too lenient toward Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
