Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to replicate the decisive military approach used to foil the recent coup attempt in the Republic of Benin against terrorist groups and insurgents within Nigeria.
In a statement on Monday, Adeyanju commended Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces for their swift intervention in Benin, which involved coordinated ground operations and Air Force support to protect the country’s democratic government.
“This is a proud moment for Nigerians who value democracy,” Adeyanju said. “Let this serve as a clear warning to anyone attempting to undermine democracy in the Sahel.”
However, he stressed that Nigeria’s regional victory would be meaningless if similar resolve is not applied domestically to combat terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism affecting citizens across the North-West, North-East, and North-Central regions.
“The same force displayed in Benin should be directed inward to crush terrorist groups operating within our borders so that Nigeria can lead by example,” he said. Adeyanju emphasized that Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and regional influence will only be credible when citizens at home are secure.
He urged President Tinubu to prioritize domestic security with the same urgency and commitment demonstrated during the Benin intervention, insisting that Nigerians deserve the same protection and peace that democracy abroad has been defended.
