The factional Board of Trustees (BoT) loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has announced a major internal restructuring effort aimed at reorganising troubled state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and preparing for fresh congresses and a national convention.
Chairman of the factional BoT, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, disclosed this on Monday during the opening of the board’s meeting held at Wike’s Life Camp residence in Abuja. He said the move was part of a broader plan to rebuild the party from within and restore public confidence in its internal processes.
Ohuabunwa revealed that the faction had already begun reconstituting caretaker committees in affected states to pave the way for “transparent congresses and a credible convention process.” He said the reforms were necessary to strengthen the party’s internal structures and uphold fairness and inclusiveness.
Declaring support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed–led National Working Committee (NWC), Ohuabunwa said the BoT would work closely with the committee to ensure all processes complied with party guidelines and national laws.
He emphasised that the BoT must reclaim its constitutional role as the stabilising organ of the PDP, describing it as the party’s “conscience” and “moral compass.” According to him, the board must protect the party from divisive tendencies and reinforce the ideals that have defined the PDP since inception.
Ohuabunwa urged members to prioritise unity as the restructuring unfolds, stressing that the reforms were aimed at ensuring the party emerges stronger. “Our duty is to consolidate the reforms underway, deepen internal cohesion, and reposition the PDP for the leadership responsibilities ahead,” he said.
Among those present at the meeting were factional National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former deputy governors and several other party chieftains. Ohuabunwa commended members for attending despite the short notice, expressing optimism that the meeting would help stabilise and reinvigorate the party.
