Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, human rights lawyer and counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on the Nigerian Senate to reject the nomination of Reno Omokri as an Ambassador-Designate. Ejiofor warned that confirming Omokri could become “a historical error-in-progress” and damage Nigeria’s international reputation.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ejiofor described Omokri’s nomination as “profoundly unwise,” citing his alleged history of ethnic bias and controversial conduct on social media. According to the lawyer, Omokri’s online commentary, including personal attacks on national leaders and derogatory remarks targeting the Igbo ethnic group, undermines his suitability for diplomatic service.
Ejiofor accused Omokri of “malignant crusades against the Igbo nation,” alleging that he routinely propagated negative stereotypes and divisive narratives about the group. He added that no individual who has “serially abused” a major segment of the country should represent Nigeria abroad.
The IPOB lawyer further criticized Omokri’s digital presence as reckless and disruptive, claiming that his social media activities have driven many followers away due to “mental fatigue.” He argued that the former presidential aide’s past activism and protests abroad may conflict with the responsibilities of an ambassadorial role.
Ejiofor urged senators, particularly those of Igbo origin, to carefully scrutinize Omokri’s nomination and consider the potential diplomatic embarrassment his appointment could cause. While suggesting that Omokri may be better suited for a spokesperson role, he insisted that confirming him as ambassador would be detrimental to Nigeria’s image.
