Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, has been captured on video physically assaulting a constituent during a football tournament he organised. SaharaReporters obtained footage showing the incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, during the final match of the competition that began in December 2025.

The videos show Chukwu visibly angry, confronting the constituent before chasing and slapping him outside the football pitch. In another clip, a security operative assigned to the senator is seen also assaulting the individual. The victim was later arrested and detained despite the attacks.

A witness told SaharaReporters that the senator “slapped one of the players in his village Christmas competition in Amurri after a minor disagreement,” adding that Chukwu had not contributed to the community in previous years and organised the event primarily because elections are approaching.

Chukwu, who recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), had originally secured the LP ticket following the assassination of his elder brother, Oyibo Chukwu, on February 22, 2023. He won the general election for Enugu East Senatorial District with 69,136 votes, defeating former governor and then-incumbent Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, who scored 48,701 votes.

The incident has sparked outrage among constituents, raising concerns over elected officials’ conduct during public events.
