World No. 4 tennis star Novak Djokovic has announced his departure from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the union he co-founded in 2020 with Canadian Vasek Pospisil, citing concerns over “transparency and governance” within the organisation.
The PTPA, which has previously taken legal action against tennis governing bodies over alleged “anti-competitive practices” and highlighted the demanding schedules faced by players, was intended to give athletes a stronger, independent voice in the sport.
Djokovic, a 38-year-old 24-time Grand Slam champion, said in a social media post on Sunday that he had decided to step away completely, explaining: “This decision comes after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented. I am proud of the vision Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organisation.”
He added that he will now focus on his tennis, family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect his principles and integrity. Djokovic is targeting a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title at the upcoming Australian Open and will play in the ATP event in Adelaide from January 12-17 as part of his preparations for the new season.
