The Super Eagles are set to face Mozambique in the Round of 16 at AFCON 2025, aiming to avoid the pitfalls of history as they pursue continental glory.
Nigeria’s group stage was impressive, seeing the Eagles eliminate Sudan and Tunisia, with a strong showing in all matches. However, memories of AFCON 2021 linger, when Nigeria, despite topping their group with seven points and a +6 goal difference, were stunned by Tunisia in the Round of 16. A solitary goal by Youssef Msakni and a red card for Alex Iwobi ended Nigeria’s campaign abruptly.
This time, Mozambique, advancing as one of the four best third-placed teams, will test Nigeria’s mettle. The Mambas, led by midfielder Manuel Kambala, have signaled their determination, stating, “We are not going home on Monday,” underscoring their readiness to challenge the Super Eagles.
Head coach Eric Chelle remains cautious, emphasizing focus on Mozambique despite being named Best Coach of the Group Stage. Chelle plans to leverage Nigeria’s potent attacking line, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Chukwueze, Caleb Adams, and Moses Simon, alongside midfielders Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Frank Onyeka. The defence will feature Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi, while the goalkeeping spot remains flexible between Nwabali and Francis Uzoho.
Despite Nigeria being favorites, Chelle has warned against complacency, noting that the road to the AFCON trophy remains long and challenging.
The Round of 16 clash marks a crucial test for the Super Eagles as they seek to advance beyond the stage that saw them exit AFCON 2021 prematurely.
