Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has revealed that discussions are underway to bring former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi back into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Moro said some party stakeholders are reaching out to Obi and Jonathan about rejoining the PDP and potentially contesting for president under its platform.
“In the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi: ‘Come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” he stated. On Jonathan, he added: “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 under the PDP, has largely stayed away from active party politics since losing to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. He has not publicly resigned from the PDP but is yet to declare interest in the 2027 race.
Obi, on the other hand, was the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before resigning ahead of the 2023 elections, when he ran on the Labour Party platform. His candidacy attracted significant youth support, but he finished third behind President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
With less than two years to the next general election, Obi has aligned with opposition leaders, including Atiku, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He has indicated interest in contesting again but has not confirmed the platform he will use.
Moro’s comments come amid increasing speculation over the PDP’s strategy for 2027, as the opposition party weighs its options in the race to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
