A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Mr. Femi Babalola, says Governor Seyi Makinde has the credentials to contest and win the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.
Babalola spoke in Ibadan on Tuesday after inspecting a project he donated to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.
His remarks came a day after the PDP, at its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
Describing Makinde as “a fresh breath with fresh ideas,” Babalola said the governor would be completing eight years in office by 2027, which he argued gives him an advantage over other aspirants.
“Governor Makinde has performed creditably well, though there may be some deficiencies. Nobody in the world can score 100 per cent in governance. Compared to past governors in Oyo State, I think he has done very well. So he is more than qualified to win the presidential ticket of our party,” he said.
On the zoning decision, Babalola said it was “good for the party,” adding that a southern candidate would strengthen the PDP’s chances with its northern base.
Responding to questions about his own political ambition, Babalola said he was still reviewing the situation ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
“I’m watching the aspirants that are coming out. If I’m not satisfied with the calibre of aspirants, I might be forced to contest,” he said.
He, however, stressed that his priority was ensuring the PDP produces a governor with deep knowledge of Oyo State after Makinde’s tenure.
