The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that sidelining him from key party decisions could lead to the party’s downfall.
Wike, who spoke during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, criticised his exclusion from major consultations despite his long-standing contributions to the PDP, questioning why his opinion is disregarded simply because he is no longer a governor.
“I am the FCT Minister. Are you telling me that because I am not a governor, you will hold a PDP stakeholders’ meeting and exclude me, and then expect the party to survive?” he asked.
The former Rivers State governor accused the PDP governors of making decisions that could “bury the party,” warning that the current leadership style was divisive and self-destructive.
“All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it APC that makes you take wrong decisions? You mean two or three people, because they are governors and receive large allocations, will go and decide, and you tell me to follow? Follow who?” Wike queried.
Speaking on the party’s planned national convention, Wike blamed the leadership for failing to conduct necessary congresses and fulfil other requirements, which he said were delaying the process.
“If they do the right thing, will anybody stall the convention? They have not done the congresses and other things that should be in place,” he said.
The PDP has been grappling with internal crises and a wave of defections involving top members, including Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom). The party is also facing several legal disputes over its forthcoming convention.
