Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelisation at the Vatican, has warned that Nigeria’s persistent insecurity stems from the country’s own divisions and rising intolerance.

Speaking at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria during his induction into the Knights of St John International, Nigeria Subordinate, Archbishop Nwachukwu urged Nigerians to view diversity as a strength rather than a source of conflict.

“Differences are not negative. God created diversity to be united. True peace will come only when Nigerians build unity across faiths and ethnicities,” he said.

The Vatican prelate highlighted that Nigeria’s divisions have turned potential blessings into sources of insecurity. He stressed that differences in language, ethnicity, or religion should be harnessed to strengthen national unity.

Prof. Remy Uche, Supreme Subordinate President of the Knights of St John International, described Archbishop Nwachukwu’s induction as a landmark moment for the Church in Nigeria and condemned killings in the name of religion.

“God forbids killing, regardless of faith. Fundamentalists who perpetrate violence are not true followers of any religion. We must uphold peace and be our brother’s keeper,” Prof. Uche said.

Florence Chuke, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Abuja Grand Commandery, lamented the toll of insecurity on women and children.

“It is painful to see human lives taken indiscriminately. We pray for peace to return to Nigeria,” she said.

Very Rev. Fr. Mike Umoh, Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat, highlighted the need for effective communication and collaboration within the Church to address societal challenges.

The event drew clergy, Knights, and Ladies from across the country, all echoing calls for tolerance, interfaith harmony, and national unity.
