BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Daniel Israel Mincey, 20, a football player at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after allegedly stabbing two teammates hours before a scheduled game.

Mincey, a native of Pompano Beach, Florida, was taken into custody by campus police on Saturday morning and is being held at Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $90,000.

According to court documents, Mincey allegedly attempted to kill teammate Jasire Peterson and seriously injured Joshua Underwood with a knife.

David Bigney, an attorney representing Mincey’s family, said it is too early to comment as the evidence is still under review.

The incident occurred at UAB’s Football Operations Building on Saturday morning. Both injured players were hospitalized but have since been released and are recovering, interim head coach Alex Mortensen said.

“I’ve met with our injured players and their families. They are okay and recovering,” Mortensen said.

Mincey, who transferred to UAB from the University of Kentucky in May, has been removed from the team roster. Mortensen added that the team went ahead with its game against the University of South Florida so seniors could play their final match. He commended players for managing the situation, noting that some opted to sit out.
