The Labour Party (LP) has vowed to remove the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government in the 2027 general elections, citing worsening hardship and insecurity under the ruling party.
Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party, made the announcement at a media briefing held at the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Abeokuta. He called on Nigerian workers to join the LP in order to “rescue the nation” from what he described as the APC’s “clueless” leadership.
Olorunfemi highlighted that civil servants have a constitutional right to join political parties and hold party positions. He noted that they only need to resign or take a leave of absence if contesting elections. “The Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of association. A recent Supreme Court judgment affirmed that civil servants cannot be barred from joining political parties,” he said.
He urged workers to participate actively in governance rather than limiting their engagement to strikes and protests. “By joining the Labour Party and representing their wards, workers can directly influence governance. To end hardship, insecurity, and falsehood, workers must unite with us to send the APC packing in 2027,” Olorunfemi added.
Addressing claims of internal factionalism, the deputy national chairman said the party is united under the leadership of Julius Abure. He dismissed reports of divisions as “mere noise” and reaffirmed the Supreme Court’s validation of the party’s national convention.
As part of a reconciliation effort, the LP appointed Abayomi Arabambi as Acting Vice Chairman for the South-West, pending NEC approval, and former factional chairman Lamidi Apapa to the party’s Board of Trustees.
Arabambi pledged to work towards making the Labour Party the dominant political force in Ogun State ahead of 2027 and criticized Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration as “incompetent.” He promised that an LP-led government would prioritize transparency and people-centered governance.
The party also announced its schedule for upcoming congresses: ward congress on December 2, local government congress on December 4, and state congress on December 6.
