The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, a suspected member of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), who was arrested in July 2022. The DSS also awarded Nwafor N5 million in compensation and provided free medicare.
The release follows a detailed investigation by DSS personnel, which cleared Nwafor of any wrongdoing. The action aligns with the directive of DSS Director General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, to review all inherited cases to ensure due process and justice.
“Mr. Nwafor’s case is among several reviewed under the DG’s leadership. The gesture reflects the DSS’s commitment to the rule of law and accountability,” a security source said. The source added that three other Abia men, Udemba, Onyedikachi, and Eze, also suspected of belonging to IPOB, were released.
The source highlighted that Ajayi has a record of compensating individuals wrongfully detained or injured during security operations. Previously, the DSS paid N20 million to a Jos-based businessman shot during an operation in 2016 and recently awarded N10 million to an Abuja-based businesswoman detained for alleged illegal oil bunkering.
The DG’s initiative is part of a broader effort to correct past mistakes, establish accountability, and uphold human rights within the agency.
