The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to halt plans to introduce a five percent tax on petroleum products or face nationwide industrial action.

In a joint statement signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, the union described the proposed levy as “economic wickedness” against already struggling Nigerians.

The statement noted that citizens are still grappling with the impact of fuel subsidy removal, high pump prices, food inflation, and a weakening naira, warning that an additional tax would worsen hardship, cripple businesses, and deepen poverty.

“The TUC urges the federal government to immediately stop this anti-people’s plan in its entirety. Failure to do so will leave us with no option but to mobilise Nigerian workers and the masses for a total nationwide resistance,” the statement read.

The union directed its state councils, affiliates, and structures to remain on standby for possible strike action and called on civil society groups, professional bodies, student unions, market associations, faith leaders, and other stakeholders to join in resisting the policy.

“Nigerians deserve economic justice, not endless punishment,” the TUC declared.
