The Take It Back – Lagos movement has condemned the recent demolitions and evictions in Oworonshoki, describing them as violent and unlawful. The group called for urgent government intervention following reports of arson, destruction of properties, and the arrest of two residents.

In a statement on Thursday, the movement said eyewitnesses reported that unidentified individuals, allegedly hired thugs and security operatives, forcibly entered homes, removed valuables, and set buildings on fire, leaving several residents homeless and traumatized. Among those affected was the family of Babsolowo Aramide and Babsolowo Oluwakemi, whose elderly grandmother was reportedly inside their home during the destruction.

The situation escalated when the two women were allegedly arrested for using abusive language amid the chaos. They were held for several hours in a police van before being transferred to the Lagos Task Force Police Base in Oshodi, where they may face immediate arraignment in a mobile court.

Take It Back – Lagos criticized the use of violence, intimidation, and involvement of non-state actors in eviction exercises. The group demanded the release of the detained women, an inquiry into the alleged arson, theft, assault, and unlawful detentions, and a halt to ongoing demolitions in Oworonshoki and other Lagos communities.

The movement also urged the government to adopt transparent urban development practices that prioritize residents’ safety, rights, and dignity over private interests.

Oworonshoki, a waterfront community in Kosofe Local Government Area, has experienced repeated demolitions since 2016, displacing thousands and disrupting livelihoods, according to human rights groups including Justice & Empowerment Initiatives (JEI) and Spaces for Change.
