The Kaduna Anglican Diocese has confirmed the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, a priest who was abducted alongside his wife, Sarah Achi, in late October from their home in the Nissi community of Chikun Local Government Area. His wife and daughter remain in captivity.
In a statement signed by Bishop Most Revd Timothy Yahaya, the Diocese described Achi’s death as a “painful loss” to the church and community. The Diocese has also canceled a program planned in his honor and called for prayers for the safe release of his family.
Before his death, the kidnappers reportedly sent photographs of Achi and his wife as proof of life while demanding a ransom of N600 million. The images showed them and other captives in a distressed state, reportedly malnourished and chained.
Venerable Achi served as the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, Kaduna. His abduction and subsequent death have intensified concerns over the security of clergy and civilians in Kaduna State.
