The Senate on Wednesday confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s nominees for the positions of service chiefs after a closed-door screening session that lasted over two hours.
Those confirmed include Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.
The confirmation followed President Tinubu’s request to the National Assembly for expedited consideration of the nominees to ensure effective coordination of the nation’s security architecture.
During the closed session, lawmakers engaged the nominees on their plans to strengthen intelligence coordination, modernize military operations, and rebuild public confidence in the armed forces.
After the deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio conducted a voice vote, and all four nominees were unanimously approved.
Akpabio commended the President for what he described as a strategic selection, noting that the appointees possess the experience and credibility required to reposition the Nigerian military. He added that their confirmation reflects renewed national confidence in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to security reform and the protection of citizens’ lives and property.
The Senate President also praised his colleagues for dedicating the entire plenary to the confirmation exercise, describing it as a demonstration of patriotism and responsibility toward national stability.
