The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano State has arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly trying to smuggle Indian hemp into the Kano High Court custodial facility.

In a statement on Thursday, the NCoS Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa, said the suspect, a resident of Tishama Hotoro Quarters, Kano, was apprehended by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre while inmates were being escorted for their court hearings.

The suspect was reportedly found concealing the substance inside a loaf of bread, which he intended to hand over to an inmate during proceedings.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Inuwa commended the officers of Goron Dutse Custodial Centre, led by ACC Kafilu Abdullahi, for their professionalism and vigilance in preventing illicit substances from entering correctional facilities. He reaffirmed the NCoS’s commitment to maintaining secure, drug-free custodial environments.

The controller also urged the public, especially parents and guardians, to discourage involvement in criminal activities and emphasized the Service’s mandate to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate offenders into society.

The NCoS recently foiled a similar drug smuggling attempt as part of its ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities within correctional facilities.
