The Lagos State Police Command has summoned the Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Chris Okafor, over allegations of multiple rape, sexual offences and other acts capable of causing a breach of public peace.
The police said the cleric has been formally served with an invitation letter and is expected to appear before the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, by 10 a.m. on Monday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations following multiple complaints against the pastor.
According to the statement, the invitation was served through Okafor’s legal representative, and the pastor has been directed to cooperate fully with investigators at the SCID, where probes into what the command described as “capital offences and other serious crimes” have commenced.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID to carry out a thorough investigation into the several criminal allegations against Pastor Chris Okafor,” Adebisi said.
The command said adequate security has been provided for alleged victims and urged anyone who may have suffered abuse to come forward to make statements. It assured that the identities of victims and witnesses would be kept strictly confidential and fully protected throughout the investigation.
The police also called on members of the public with credible information or evidence relevant to the case to assist the investigation by contacting the SCID or the Police Public Relations Department.
Reiterating its position, the command stressed that no individual would be shielded from investigation due to status, influence or religious standing, assuring that the matter would be handled professionally, transparently and in accordance with the law.
The development follows recent controversy involving the pastor and Nollywood actress Doris Ogala, who had accused Okafor of breaching an alleged promise to marry her. Okafor later publicly apologised to the actress during a church service, while denying the allegations against him and stating his willingness to make restitution to anyone he may have offended.
Police investigations into the allegations against the cleric are ongoing.
