Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party backed by a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku confirmed the development on Monday via his X handle, where he posted a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card with the caption, “It’s official.”
His defection comes four months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has been grappling with a prolonged internal crisis. Atiku left the PDP two weeks after opposition leaders adopted the ADC as their joint political platform for the 2027 polls.
Why Atiku Left the PDP
In a letter dated July 16 and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding principles as the reasons for his resignation.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he stated, expressing appreciation for the support he received over the years.
Atiku also wished the party and its leadership success in their future endeavours.
