A U.S. Congressman has called on Nigeria to pardon Sunday Jackson, a farmer sentenced to death after killing an attacker while defending himself.
Representative Riley Moore, speaking during a U.S. House of Representatives hearing on President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), described Jackson’s conviction as unjust.
“I would urge the Nigerian government to consider pardoning Sunday Jackson, who was defending his own life against a Fulani militant. That militant lost his life, and now Jackson faces the death penalty. Where is the justice in that?” Moore, a Republican, said Thursday.
Jackson, a farmer, was reportedly involved in a confrontation with armed herders, during which he acted in self-defense. Moore’s appeal comes amid discussions on Nigeria’s human rights record and CPC status.
