A Lagos High Court has restrained the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and others from taking further steps in the leadership tussle within the institution’s chapter of the union.
Justice Ismaila Ijelu issued the order in suit No. YSD/6531MJR/2025, filed by Gbenga Adenaiya and six others against Yusuf Ademola Rasaq, UNILAG, and six others. The case stems from a dispute between rival factions vying for control of the university’s SSANU chapter.
The order followed ex parte motions supported by affidavits, exhibits, and arguments presented by the claimants’ counsel, Chief Ajose Abẹjoye, assisted by Olúwaṣeun Ikumelo. After reviewing the submissions, the court directed all parties to maintain the status quo and suspend any planned elections until the matter is determined.
Justice Ijelu warned that no action should be taken that could undermine the court’s authority, prejudice its decision, or impose a fait accompli while proceedings are ongoing.
The case was adjourned to October 24, 2025, for hearing of the Motion on Notice.
