Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has accused President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately destabilising opposition parties in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Tambuwal said the ruling party has been orchestrating defections and internal disputes in opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP). “I am not accusing them; I am saying they are involved in efforts aimed at destabilisation of opposition parties,” he stated.
Tambuwal highlighted recent defections by governors, lawmakers, and party members from the PDP and LP to the APC, describing the trend as a threat to the country’s democratic process. Some opposition parties have also faced internal conflicts, which he alleged are influenced by the APC.
In response, President Tinubu dismissed opposition efforts as a “sinking ship,” encouraging members to abandon what he called a “coalition of confusion.” Meanwhile, some opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, have formed a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to counter the APC’s dominance.
Tambuwal’s comments underscore ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups ahead of the 2027 elections.
