The chief executive of Astronomer, a New York-based data platform company, has resigned following the circulation of a viral video showing him embracing a female colleague at a Coldplay concert.
In a statement released on Saturday, the company confirmed that CEO Andy Byron had stepped down: “Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.”
The footage, captured at Coldplay’s performance at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, showed a man and woman swaying to music and hugging before ducking away when they appeared on the stadium’s jumbo screen. They were later identified as Byron, who is married, and Kristin Cabot, Astronomer’s Chief People Officer.
Adding to the moment’s visibility, Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin quipped from the stage, “Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy,” a comment that fueled speculation and pushed the video to viral status across social media.
In response, Astronomer placed Byron on leave and launched an internal investigation into the relationship.
“As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,” the company said in its statement. “Our leaders are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct and accountability. Recently, that standard was not met.”
The company has appointed its Chief Product Officer as interim CEO while the board begins the search for a permanent replacement.
The incident has ignited broader conversations online about the boundaries of workplace relationships, executive behavior, and privacy in public settings amid the realities of viral content in the digital age.
