The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has commenced the review of the 2000 National Telecom Policy.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, announced this on Tuesday during a media engagement in Abuja. He explained that the review aligns with the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and forms part of the strategic blueprint released by the Minister, Abudzun Tidjani, earlier this year.
Maida said the Commission would also begin publishing quarterly reports on the performance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to promote transparency and competitiveness in the telecom sector.
“By the end of this month or early September, we will release a public map for network performance based on real consumer data. This will be updated quarterly, providing state-by-state analysis of operators’ performance across key service indicators,” he said.
The EVC noted that the disclosures would compel operators to improve services while strengthening accountability to their boards and investors. He added that good corporate governance remains central to enhancing financial, service delivery, and regulatory compliance in the industry.
Maida further revealed that the NCC had revised its quality of service guidelines to include not just MNOs, but also Tower Companies (TowerCos), which provide critical infrastructure such as power and security. He disclosed that a framework is also under review to standardise recharge and top-up operations.
Earlier, the NCC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nnena Ukoha, said the engagement with journalists was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the media.
The Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau, Freda Bruce-Bennett, also advised consumers on managing data usage by turning off autoplay on social media platforms and reducing background data consumption.
