A tsunami warning has been issued following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Solomon Islands around midday on Monday, November 21st.

According to the Daily Mail UK, a second earthquake measuring 6.0 struck nearby 30 minutes later, with five earthquakes recorded in the region within a 90-minute period.

As a result, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning on Tuesday following an earthquake in Malango, Solomon Islands.

This comes just hours after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Java province, killing at least 162 people and injuring 700 others, mostly in Cianjur.

Manasseh Sogavare, the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, has also urged residents to relocate to higher ground.

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service, on the other hand, stated that there was no immediate tsunami threat to the region, but warned of unusual sea currents along the coast.

For some of the Solomon Islands’ coastline, the US Tsunami Warning System predicts waves of between 0.3 and one metre above tide level.
