The Senate has scheduled Wednesday for the confirmation of the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, and other Service Chiefs nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The decision followed two separate letters from President Tinubu to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, requesting the screening and confirmation of the top military officers.
Reading the letters during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio said the President’s request was made in line with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. He also urged the Senate to give the matter prompt consideration.
Following the reading of the letters, Akpabio referred the requests to the Committee of the Whole and announced Wednesday as the date for the confirmation exercise.
President Tinubu had on Sunday appointed Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. He also named Major General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.
