Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has highlighted the central role of Ibadan in Nigeria’s socio-economic and political history, describing the city as vital to the nation’s development.

Obi stated this on Sunday during a visit to the Olubadan-designate and former Oyo State governor, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan. He was accompanied by Labour Party chieftain Yunusa Tanko and some Igbo leaders.

“The position of Ibadan in Nigeria’s history cannot be ignored. The city has always been a home to all, thanks to the hospitable nature of its people. With leaders like Ladoja, who has served as governor and senator, I believe his wealth of experience will guide his reign as the 44th Olubadan,” Obi said.

He pledged his support for Oba Ladoja, assuring that he would contribute to making his reign successful.

In his response, Ladoja described his ascension as an opportunity for further service to humanity, stressing that leadership of the Olubadan throne is not about glamour but responsibility.

“That I am alive today is a further confirmation of God’s grace. It is God who makes one Olubadan, not money or influence. I see my appointment as another opportunity for service, not glamour. The throne is about what you have to offer the people,” the Olubadan-designate said.
