The Obidient Movement has appealed to former President Goodluck Jonathan to support Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 elections rather than contest against him.

The call followed a closed-door meeting between Jonathan and Obi in Abuja last Thursday, after which Obi described the former president on X as “a very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader.” He said their discussions centred on national issues.

Although Jonathan has not declared interest in the 2027 race, speculation about his possible candidacy has continued. The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, said Jonathan should remain a respected statesman and rally behind Obi, whom millions of Nigerians see as the face of a new political direction.

“They have been friends for a long time. But for us in the Obidient Movement, it would be great if Jonathan remains the respected statesman he is known for. He has done his best as president, and this is the time to support his brother,” Tanko said.

Meanwhile, Obi has renewed calls for comprehensive electoral reforms, stressing that credible polls are crucial for inclusive growth, job creation, and development. Speaking after attending the 3rd Annual National Summit of the Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) and the launch of The Flame of Hope: Igniting the Soul of a Nation by Emeka Patrick Ude, Obi urged young Nigerians to remain engaged in the electoral process.

“The journey to a better nation is never easy, but with faith, resilience, focus, and unity of purpose, we can birth a country that reflects justice, equity, greatness, and shared prosperity,” he said.

Obi also commended the CPO for its consistency and Ude for his book, which he described as both inspirational and a call to action.
