Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated N30 million to two colleges of Nursing Sciences in Anambra State as part of his ongoing support for the health and education sectors.

Obi presented cheques of N15 million each to the College of Nursing Sciences, Adazi Nnukwu, and UniNiger University Teaching Hospital, Iyienu, during visits to the institutions on Wednesday.

The former governor said his continued donations to schools and hospitals stem from his lifelong commitment to uplifting humanity and improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

“I believe that life must have a purpose, and my purpose is to support people as a way of uplifting humanity,” Obi said. “I go around Nigeria supporting schools because education and health are critical. Life expectancy in Nigeria is currently 54 years—one of the lowest in the world. To change this, we must invest in health, and nurses are key human capital in that investment.”

Obi commended the proprietor of the Adazi Nnukwu College, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, describing him as a strong partner in advancing healthcare education in the state.

“When I became governor in 2006, no school of nursing, medical laboratory, or midwifery college in Anambra was accredited,” he recalled. “I approached the church to help, and through their support, many of these institutions, including this one, now thrive.”

During a separate visit to the Practising Nursery and Primary School in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, which was gutted by fire in December 2024, Obi pledged to rebuild the facility.

The headmistress, Comrade Eucharia Egwuonwu, lamented that the school had been abandoned since the fire incident, forcing pupils to study under harsh conditions. She said several parents had withdrawn their children due to the lack of facilities.

Obi assured her that reconstruction work would begin in January 2026 to provide the pupils with a conducive learning environment.

At the Adazi Nnukwu College, the Acting Provost, Mrs. Okafor Chibugo, expressed gratitude to Obi for his consistent support.

“Your visit is a huge morale boost. It inspires us and our students to work harder. Thank you for always remembering our college,” she said.
