The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force has put in place comprehensive security measures to guarantee a peaceful and incident-free governorship election in Anambra State this weekend.
Egbetokun gave the assurance during the unveiling of the CLEEN Foundation’s 2025 Governorship Election Security Threat Assessment (STA) for Anambra State.
Represented by the Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, the IGP said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would deploy 5,224 personnel across 5,178 polling units in the state. He added that security coverage would also extend to ward, local government, and state collation centres.
“As far as the police are concerned, I want to assure the general public that we have put all the necessary security measures in place to ensure a peaceful election devoid of any incident,” Egbetokun said.
He explained that the police had developed a detailed Operation Order, which outlines the deployment of human and material resources to ensure the effective and successful conduct of the election.
Meanwhile, the CLEEN Foundation has urged security operatives to act within the confines of the law while handling firearms during the election.
The foundation’s Programme Officer, Dr. Salaudeen Hashim, emphasized the importance of professionalism and accountability, warning that any misuse of weapons would attract sanctions.
“The government is ensuring that the police and other security agents are properly trained before deployment. If you use force outside the rules and regulations, you will be held accountable,” he said.
Hashim noted that Force Order 237 provides clear guidance on the lawful and proportionate use of arms, stressing that firearms should be used only when necessary and in accordance with established procedures.
