Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has expressed condolences to victims of the early morning fire that destroyed portions of Kano Street behind the Main Market in Onitsha on Monday.
Chris Aburime, Soludo’s press secretary, issued a statement containing his remarks.
The governor expressed his grief over the tragedy, which resulted in the destruction of stores and commodities, as well as massive damages.
He stated that, as a responsive government, his administration was immediately on top of the problem and that an inquiry into the causes of the fire was underway in order to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
Soludo urged people impacted to be strong and determined in the face of such calamity, saying that his administration will continue to work with appropriate institutions to find long-term solutions to the state’s periodic fire incidents.
He asked his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Mr Julius Chukwuemeka, and Mr Sly Ezeokenwa, Commissioner for Special Duties, to travel to the market and express the government’s condolences to the victims.
