Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, alongside family members and friends, gathered in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday to commemorate the 20th memorial anniversary of his late wife, former First Lady Stella Obasanjo.
The event, held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), attracted dignitaries including former Ogun State governors, Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun.
Speaking briefly after the service, Obasanjo described the occasion as a celebration of “a life of service.”
Delivering his tribute, John Abebe, younger brother to the late former First Lady, remembered her as a kind and cheerful woman who remained calm even in difficult times. He recounted how her smile and comforting presence brought relief to their parents during moments of grief.
Her son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, reflected on her enduring impact, describing her as caring, protective, and disciplined. “She was strict but full of love. Her laughter and life lessons continue to guide me,” he said, adding that her legacy lives on through her grandchildren.
Former Governor Gbenga Daniel also paid tribute, expressing gratitude for Stella’s contributions and recalling that a motherless home in Ogun State was named in her honour during his administration.
In his sermon, Rev. Yusufu Obaje, pioneer Chaplain of the State House, Abuja, described the late Mrs. Obasanjo as a woman who lived a life of submission to God and service to humanity.
Stella Obasanjo, Nigeria’s First Lady from 1999 until her passing in 2005, was remembered for her charitable works and compassionate leadership.
