Nigerian drone technology company Terra Industries has clinched a $1.2 million contract to secure two hydropower plants, beating a well-established Israeli consortium in a competitive bid. The deal marks a significant breakthrough for African-made industrial technology and positions the young company as a rising force in the continent’s drone industry.

Founded in 2023 by 22-year-old tech entrepreneur Nathan Nwachuku, Terra Industries—formerly known as TerraHaptix—designs and manufactures high-performance drones tailored for industrial, energy, and agricultural use. Earlier this year, Nwachuku was featured in a CNN video interview where he described the company’s mission as “building world-class drone solutions in Africa, for Africa and beyond.”

Under the new contract, Terra Industries will deploy 12 autonomous drones and over 35 surveillance towers to monitor vast hydropower plant facilities. For security reasons, the project locations were not disclosed, but Nwachuku explained the importance of the mission:

“These plants have been used as hideouts by bandits and even terrorists. Our goal is to deter threats through persistent aerial surveillance and to cover terrain that’s difficult for ground patrols to monitor,” he said.

A Growing Industrial Force
Terra Industries began producing drones in Abuja in April 2024 and has since generated over $1 million in revenue from clients in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. Its cutting-edge drones feature real-time monitoring, autonomous navigation, and are optimized for challenging industrial environments.

The company has served sectors ranging from oil and mining to large-scale farming, but Nwachuku says the power sector is now the fastest-growing market, driven by rising demand for affordable and scalable security solutions. Industry estimates suggest drones can cut operational costs by up to 30% compared to traditional security systems.

Impact Beyond Borders
The victory over an Israeli consortium is seen as a milestone for Africa’s tech landscape, showing that homegrown startups can compete globally with tailored, cost-effective innovations. Analysts say this could spur greater investor confidence in African manufacturing and boost local employment in high-tech industries.

With Africa’s energy infrastructure facing both expansion and security challenges, Terra Industries’ breakthrough signals a shift toward locally driven industrial development, offering solutions that could reshape security and monitoring practices across the continent.
