The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the military coup that overthrew the constitutional government in Guinea-Bissau, urging the immediate restoration of democratic rule in the West African nation.
In a statement on Thursday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said the coup undermines the democratic progress, constitutional order, and stability of Guinea-Bissau and the wider sub-region. Nigeria described the action as a “blatant violation” of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any unconstitutional seizure of power.
The statement emphasized solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and called for the safety and security of all those detained, as well as respect for democratic institutions. It also urged the military junta to guarantee the protection of election observers still in the country on official assignment.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria urges all actors to exercise restraint, prioritize peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people expressed through their ballots,” the statement read. “Those responsible for this act will be held accountable for threatening the nation’s stability and reversing hard-won democratic gains.”
Nigeria, a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, pledged to work with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to constitutional governance, reaffirming its commitment to democracy, peace, and stability across Africa.
