The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria (VSCN) has called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, alleging they were “illegally abducted” by the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the coalition reaffirmed its support for Venezuela and condemned what it described as renewed U.S.-led threats of military intervention and economic coercion against the South American country. The group also criticized reported plans to target other nations, including Greenland, Iran, and Nigeria, over natural resource exploitation.
The VSCN’s statement followed a solidarity visit to the Venezuelan Embassy in Nigeria last November. The coalition described the engagement as a peaceful effort to oppose alleged regime-change operations, military threats, and economic sanctions directed at Venezuela.
Key signatories of the statement include Gerald O. Katchy (Committee for the Defence of Human Rights), Blessing Yusuf (Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria), Omole Ibukun (Creative Change Centre), Abiodun Emmanuel Fayemi (African Farmers and Agricultural Practitioners), and Kunle Wizeman Ajayi (African Action Congress and United Actions for Democracy).
The coalition emphasized that foreign interference in Venezuela violates international law and sets a dangerous precedent for nations in the Global South. It also warned against Nigerian political actors aligning with foreign interests in ways that could undermine national sovereignty.
VSCN urged Nigerians committed to peace and justice to organize marches and mass actions against imperialist aggression and called on citizens to strengthen national unity, social justice, and pro-people policies as a defense against external interference.
