Robert Mugabe Jr., son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested in Harare on drug-related charges.
The 33-year-old was detained on Wednesday after police allegedly found cannabis and cocaine in his possession, Zimbabwean outlet ZimLive reported. He has been taken to the Harare Magistrates Court for arraignment.
This is not his first run-in with the law. In 2023, Mugabe Jr. was arrested following allegations of property damage and assaulting a police officer during a party dispute. Prosecutors at the time accused him of smashing windscreens and spitting on an officer, with damages estimated at $12,000. He denied the allegations and pursued an out-of-court settlement.
Mugabe Jr. is the second child of the late Robert Mugabe and his widow, Grace. His legal troubles have attracted significant public attention in Zimbabwe, where his father ruled for nearly four decades before being removed from power in 2017.
The elder Mugabe, who died in 2019 at age 95, was celebrated as a liberation hero but later faced criticism over alleged human rights abuses and economic decline under his rule.
Mugabe Jr.’s latest arrest comes as Zimbabwean authorities intensify crackdowns on drug abuse in major urban centres.
