Kylian Mbappé made history on Tuesday, joining an exclusive list of Real Madrid players after scoring twice in the club’s 6-1 triumph over AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League.
The French forward’s brace brought his tally for the season to 10 goals in just his sixth appearance, making him the fourth player in Madrid’s history to score 10 goals in a single Champions League campaign. His first came after just five minutes, with a precise strike from the edge of the box. Mbappé doubled his effort midway through the first half with a close-range finish from a Vinicius Junior assist.
With this achievement, Mbappé entered the ranks of Real Madrid legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul, and Karim Benzema, though Ronaldo has surpassed this mark seven times throughout his career at the club.
While Mbappé had reached 8 goals in previous Champions League seasons with Paris Saint-Germain (2020/21 and 2023/24), this marks his first time hitting double digits in Europe’s premier club competition. He now holds a total of 66 goals in the Champions League, ranking as the sixth-highest scorer in the tournament’s history.
Additionally, his 18 European goals in just 20 appearances for Real Madrid have already surpassed those of club greats such as Gareth Bale, Luis Figo, and Fernando Morientes. Only Alfredo Di Stéfano scored more goals than Mbappé in his first 20 matches for the club, while Ruud van Nistelrooy holds the record for the most goals in the first 20 Champions League appearances with a single club.
The victory against Monaco also marked a strong comeback for Real Madrid following setbacks in the competition, including a defeat to Manchester City in December. Goals from Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and others secured a dominant win, pushing Madrid up to second place in the group stage standings. Under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the 15-time Champions League winners are aiming for a top-eight finish as the competition progresses.
