A 300-level Computer Science student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), identified as Kelvin, has reportedly died by suicide following financial difficulties linked to online betting and unpaid accommodation obligations.
Kelvin, who lived off-campus, had been entrusted by his landlord to act as caretaker of a student lodge, collecting rent from occupants. Sources told SaharaReporters that he lost a significant sum of money to online betting while also owing rent and other debts, including funds collected from students he had promised accommodation.
A former roommate said Kelvin had recently transferred ₦100,000 to the landlord despite having about ₦570,000, citing technical issues with a virtual bank. Friends reported that the mounting financial pressure and accumulated debts contributed to his tragic decision.
As of press time, IBBUL management and the Niger State Police had not issued statements regarding the incident.
