LASSA FEVER: 917 Cases, 171 Deaths – NCDC

In Nigeria in 2022, a total of 171 people died as a result of the Lassa fever virus.

According to the latest Lassa fever situation report for week 36, retrieved from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control website, the country has 917 confirmed cases of the disease.

The confirmed cases were stated to be scattered across the country’s 25 states and 102 Local Government Areas.

In addition, no new healthcare personnel was affected with the viral disease during the reporting week, according to the situation report.

According to the NCDC, a total of 6,660 suspected cases had been confirmed in 2022.

Lassa fever is an acute viral infection spread by the common African rat that is animal-borne or zoonotic. The disease has a significant morbidity and mortality rate, as well as economic and health security consequences.
According to the report, Ondo has 32% of all verified cases, Edo has 26%, and Bauchi has 13%.
In week 36, the number of new confirmed cases reduced from 10 in week 35, 2022 to 8 cases,” according to the study. These were reported in the states of Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, and Anambra. From week 1 to week 36 of 2022, a total of 171 deaths were reported, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.6%, which is lower than the CFR for the same time in 2021 (23.3%).

In total, 25 states have documented at least one confirmed case across 102 LGAs for 2022.” 71% of all confirmed cases are from the states of Ondo (32%), Edo (26%), and Bauchi (13%).“
The most impacted age group is between the ages of 21 and 30. (Range: 0 to 90 years, Median Age: 30 years). For confirmed cases, the male-to-female ratio is 1:0.8. The number of suspected cases has increased as compared to the same period in 2021.
There were no new Healthcare workers affected in reporting week 36.”
The organization stated that the “National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG) continues to coordinate response actions at all levels.
